Associate Professor | Shimpei Kudo
He is a specialist of the Attachment theory and Psychoanalytic psychotherapy concerning establishment and development of safety and security in human mind and psychological problems led by negative effects on it. In specific, his focus is on how environment and trauma in early development affect occurrence of an individual's problem, among other things, criminal actions, and how his/her rehabilitation is possible at the individual/societal level. Non-profit corporation to support criminals' rehabilitation is his field.
Associate Professor | Masanori Katsuyama
My specialty is Forest Hydrology. Hydrology is the science that deals with the waters above and below the land surfaces of the Earth, and Forest Hydrology especially discuss how the activity of the creature called the forest affects the water cycle as well as water quality in mountainous area. I collect water samples in my research field every month, and measure the water quality and think about runoff generation processes. A variety of students gather in GSS. I hope you all to acquire the ability to logically understand the natural science phenomenon regardless of your discipline, because this ability is the most basic ability to deal with the risk of the global environmental change.
Associate Professor | Minako Jen Yoshikawa
Crossing over Public Health, Business Administration, and Geopolitics, my interdisciplinary research aims to empower societies with abilities to respond better towards health threats. In particular, I am interested in improving social measures to mitigate damage that can be caused by outbreaks of mosquito-borne viral infections. My main study field is the Republic of Singapore, a global travel destination, where frequent transnational movements of people, goods, and pathogens might lead to spread of infectious diseases. Field research typical of Area Studies has enabled me to learn local knowledge as well as to collect data from international organizations, research institutions, governments, private sectors and local communities.
Associate Professor | Kumiko Kondo
This year marks my 10th year of teaching. After receiving my doctorate in global environmental studies from Kyoto University, I worked for several academic institutions. My research interests include CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and CSV (Creating Shared Value) initiatives that aim to strengthen ties between companies and their stakeholders in order to create prosperous societies. I have come to realize that there is a huge perception gap between companies and students. By taking part in the development of our ePortfolio system (‘GSSfolio’), I hope that I will be able to help prepare graduate students to pursue a variety of careers.
Associate Professor | Mika Shimizu
I have engaged in global risks and governance research based in the United States since my student years: completed master degree in international service in American University, and Doctor degree in international public policy in Osaka University. In parallel with the academic research, I have worked for Embassy of Japan in the U.S. and Nomura Research Institute America as a researcher, and committed to the policy research in East-West Center. With my first book Collaborative Knowledge Creation based Resilience, I am determined to work on creation of problem solving oriented social schemes, through seeing both the overall structure of systems (“forests”) and components within systems (“trees”) at the same time for the changing risk society.
Assistant Professor | Florance Lahournat
Her research interest is in cultural anthropology, material culture and ritual studies, more specifically the adaptive nature of cultural and ritual practices. Currently, her research focuses on the preservation and transmission of cultural practices, notably living heritage, and its meaning and effect on community resilience and community building, in the context of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake aftermath. As a central part of this research, she has been conducting fieldwork on the East Japan coastline, exploring the relationship between local tradition and local community, and the complex balance between material and community reconstruction. |

Assistant Professor | Nobuyuki Ito
I specialize in environmental economics. To determine solutions to environmental issues, approaches from various fields are required. Natural science and life science reveal the extent to which environmental pollution and destruction are caused by the economic activities of humans. The role of economics in environmental issues is twofold: to evaluate the impact of environmental pollution and destruction in quantitative monetary terms and design institutions that reduce pollution efficiently. I would like to explore how we should approach the real issues using interdisciplinary research, through discussions with GSS students. |
